"Iodine", the second of the recordings done for Upstart was written on the road touring behind "Jack In The Pulpit". Upstart folded the day Iodine was released so it was left up to Brennan to tour and promote this record himself.
Kim Webber in No Depression wrote; "Iodine In The Wine is mature, well crafted, spiritual, cynical, and hopeful. The title cut questions who spoiled the party, who took away the american dream. "Who put the iodine in the wine?" -This dreamy, bluesy cut is prime pickings for a major release."

Brennan was signed to Upstart, a division of Rounder in 1994 after a year long Tuesday night residency at Toad in Cambridge, Ma. This recording contains the songs that were writtenand performed there.
Geoffrey Himes of The Washington Post wrote: "Brennan's lyrics-closer to Ray Davies than Bob Dylan in their simple, witty language-are only part of the story on "Jack In The Pulpit," his debut solo album. The former leader of such Boston rock and soul bands as Push Push and The Martells, Brennan has mastered the rock and roll basics of Keith Richards guitar riffs, Charlie Wattsgrooves, Stax horn charts, raspy Rascals vocals and sweet Drifters ballads. It's an older out offashion music but Brennan invests these recycled ingrediants with an undeniable passion."
The core band on Jack In The Pulpit includes: Kevin Barry, gtr; Duke Levine, gtrs; Richard Gates, bs; Billy Conway, Jay Bellerose, dms; Dennis Brennan, gtr, vocals.

This is Dennis Brennan's first commercially released recording. At the time of its release, Tim Riley of The Boston Phoenix wrote; "..... touts trim ensemble work and songcraft over attitude, these are stout, athletic performances of prepossessing songs".
Brett Milano of The Boston Globe opined: "...there's some real gems of songwriting here. If a major -label band had recorded the snarling "I Taught Her Everything She Knows" it would almost certainly be a hit."
Musician Magazine, "Platters That Matter", listed #3, March 1989
